Mosaic Project in St Catherine's Primary School

This is an enormous project that has developed over time with the Children being involved in the design and ideas stage as well as in the making of the Mosaic which will enhance their playground walls. The first part of the project involved a trip for the top three classes Violet, Blue and Green (nearly 90 children in all) to Stover Country Park near to their school where they had time with 2 Stover Rangers to look at some of the Habitats and the animals and plants you find there and to take part in experiential games exploring how food chains work and how each plant and animal is effected by changes in the environment.

Next with Artists Andrew Stacey and Bridget Arnold the children did some drawings of some of the animals in their habitat whilst in the Centre at Stover. There were then further days in school doing larger more detailed pictures with Wax crayons and Ink wash to develop images that would go onto the Mosaic.

  
 

Local Mosaic Artist Anne Read's expertise has been invaluable in pulling the children's designs together to make what will finally go onto the playground walls.
After a training session in the school for Teachers and parents the first session using the tiles from British Ceramic Tile was with the after school group.

After much preparation the Mosaic went to the Contemporary Craft Fair where schools had been invited in on the Friday. St Catherine's were really fortunate, through the British Ceramic Tile Percent for Art funding, to be at the Fair for the whole day and to get started on making their Mosaic.

The Following Monday work began in earnest in the school, each Monday and Friday has been spent with Violet and Blue Class working hard at putting pieces of tiles from British Ceramic Tile Factory together to make their unique Mosaic.
