These Naked Clay forms then become a blank canvas for the smoke to decorate. Presently Bridget's work is influenced by Ferns and plants that grow near her home in Bovey Tracey on the edge of Dartmoor.
There is something very elemental about working with clay it comes out of the ground, but can be manipulated by man to become a seemingly infinite number of forms, with accordingly an infinite number of finishes. As potters it is the choices that we make during the processes we work in that determines what the end result is.
Smoke firing is the baptism of fire to get the still porous forms to absorb the smoke; resists stop the smoke entering certain parts. But each pod is unique as the fire has its own random nature depending on the weather and wind direction. So you never quite know what will come out of the fire. But that is part of the attraction of smoke firing for Bridget as she likes to give her pots over to the forces of nature once more
My ceramic work is of course described as non-functional partly due to the low firing; as the clay is still porous which is required for the smoke to be absorbed by the clay, another of the decisions I had to make, but I feel that my pots main function is to bring joy to people.
